STEM with Steam Class
In our STEM with Steam Class, we combine scientific discovery with the fascination of railroads.
Depending on their age and interest, children explore how things move, why bridges hold weight, how circuits light up trains, and more—all through playful, hands-on experiments and mini-builds. The focus is on curiosity, creativity, and learning by doing: every child is encouraged to ask questions, try ideas, and test their inventions.
Get your hands dirty
The course takes place in our STEM workshop in Winter Haven. When the weather’s nice, we also use the outdoor garden railroad for real-world experiments and train testing.
During our STEM with Steam Class, your child will learn the basics of using hand tools such as hammers, saws, files and drills as well as the guided use of 3D printers and laser engravers. Our activities are child-friendly and present STEM subjects in a fun and playful way.
Why STEM with Steam?
Railroads are more than just a charming piece of history - they’re the perfect foundation for exploring how the world works.
From the rise of the Industrial Revolution to the shaping of the modern United States, trains played a key role in unlocking a vast continent. Along the way, they put core STEM principles into motion: physics, engineering, mathematics, energy, and logistics.
We use trains as a hands-on gateway to complex ideas. How does steam pressure move a piston? What makes a bridge strong? Why do narrow-gauge tracks work better in mountains? Every class is built around a question rooted in movement, structure, or innovation - just like the railroad itself.

Fall Term starts at 08-11-2025
Please dress for building and experimenting - some projects include glue, cardboard, or a little bit of grease!
